Facebook was always about friends. But now it’s also about love. The social media giants have launched Facebook Dating in the U.S., their answer to Tinder, Coffee Meets Bagel, Bumble and other dating apps. The new feature brings together Facebook’s networking infrastructure and data to help find matches that suit you.

Facebook Dating lives within your Facebook app. The extension is made available to users 18 and above, who need to opt-in and activate their Dating profile — kids on Facebook won’t randomly chance upon a new dating app that lets them meet suitors in town.

Once activated, it requests for your gender, who you’re interested in, a bunch of T&Cs and several privacy settings. You can tweak your dating location, distance from you, age and height preferences. You can even indicate religious preferences and whether you’re okay with your date having children.

The Pros of dating on facebook

Obviously, the biggest pro is that it is free. You don’t have to go to an online dating site and pay a monthly fee just to browse through profiles that may or may not interest you.

You can look at their picture and profile for free, message for free, chat for free, and share pictures for free.

Facebook Dating is much more focused than Tinder: it is not possible to put a heart to those who have nothing in common with us, with our tastes, with geolocation or simply with those who do not meet the requirements we initially requested.

As you’d expect, Dating takes advantage of plenty of its big brother’s immense pool of data and features. The app can suggest other users who have in common events you’ve attended, stuff you’ve liked and groups followed on your main account.

A unique feature called Secret Crush lets you list individuals from your Facebook friends and Instagram Followers. If they ever join Dating, they’ll be notified that someone has a “crush” on them. If they add you to their “crush” list as well, you’ll be instantly matched, as if to accelerate the dating process. Besides this occasion, Facebook promises never to reveal your crushes — if you’re fickle, you can have up to nine!

Facebook sure is bent on speeding up the matching process. The app lets interact with other users by letting you comment on their profile pictures despite not “matching” with them. This could get annoying very fast.

Chats are limited to text and GIFs only. No links, photos, payments and videos can be shared on Facebook Dating. These restrictions are a heavy-handed answer to porn-bot spams, unwelcome photos and other scams that have brought dating apps to infamy. This is a courageous move that could really make dating apps a healthier place.

The Cons of dating on facebook

Facebook is about appearance… I know I always say that appearance doesn’t matter to women — but that is when you have a chance to talk to them face-to-face and impress them with all of your other charms.

On Facebook, people look at your picture.

  • If it is off-putting, chances are they will not reply.
  • If there is no picture, chances are they will block you.
  • If you are scary looking, you will also get blocked.

Facebook makes it very easy to reject people. Even the people I was nice to in person were blocked by me on Facebook. I didn’t want to chat with certain people or know about their lives (or have them know about mine).

In short, you will get rejected a lot if your face does not appeal to many women. It’s so shallow to say, but it is true.

Best tips to use facebook dating

-GIVE MEANING TO YOUR PROFILE PICTURE

If you have ever been on an online dating site, you know that your profile picture means a lot. It tells a woman or a man a little bit more about you, but more importantly it sends a message about what you value and who you are.

If it sends the wrong message, people may not even look at the rest of your profile.

On Facebook, people are going to see your profile pic before anything else; therefore, put a pic up that sends a positive message about you. For instance, if you love dogs, make sure you include a dog in your profile pic. If you love to travel, put up a pic of yourself traveling.

-FILL IN YOUR PROFILE WITH WITTY AND INTELLIGENT INFORMATION

If somebody checks out your profile, thanks to your picture, give him/her something more to look at. Even though it seems cheesy, fill in the ‘about you’ section to let them know that you are the type of person that they want to get to know better.

Whether you want to attract people on Facebook, you need to show them that you have some substance behind your picture.

  • Use your wit!
  • Use your humor!
  • Use your intelligence!

Make sure you use all those things to let people on Facebook clearly know who you are and why they should be interested in you!

-USE POSITIVE WORDS

Now that you have somebody interested in your profile picture and your profile, make sure you keep their interest by using positive words in your updates.

People will be more likely to like or talk to you if you send out a positive message. Think of it this way; who wants to get to know a grumpy asshole, let alone have him in her life as a partner?
